Kyphosis is a medical condition in which the spine curves abnormally. The spine is supposed to have a natural curve, but Kyphosis is characterized by the rounding of the upper back that also causes the head to slant forward. It may occur in any region of the spine, but is most common in the thoracic region and produces a characteristic “hump” at the upper back. This can lead to pain, difficulty moving, and other problems. Although it is more prevalent in elder people, the condition can also affect people across all age groups including children and young people. Depending upon the severity of the condition, treatment can vary from simple posture correction exercises to even surgery.
In a healthy vertebra, the alignment of the bones and ligaments in the upper vertebral region has a structure that allows for the body to bend between 20 to 45 degrees against the straight back when in a normal position. However, this curvature of a patient with kyphosis exceeds 50 degrees and the back is unable to stay normally straight, which also ends up making the head tilt abnormally forward as the neck’s structure can’t maintain a straight position because of this excessive tilting.
Kyphosis can be caused by several things. One common cause is poor posture. Slouching or hunching over often leads to Kyphosis. Another common cause is scoliosis, which is a condition that causes the spine to curve sideways. Other causes of Kyphosis include birth defects, injuries, tumors, and certain diseases.
Kyphosis can also be caused by wear and tear on the spine. This is most common in older adults. As we age, our bones start to deteriorate. This can lead to Kyphosis.
Kyphosis can cause a number of symptoms. The most common symptom is back pain. Kyphosis can also make it difficult to move or stand up straight. People with Kyphosis may also have a hunched-over posture. In severe cases, Kyphosis can affect the lungs and heart. This can lead to shortness of breath and other problems.
Kyphosis is usually diagnosed with a physical examination. X-rays can also be used to diagnose Kyphosis. In some cases, MRI or CT scans may be needed. Depending on the test results, the doctor will determine whether the kyphosis condition is the result of postural errors or structural degradation.
Kyphosis. This is usually only done in severe cases. Kyphosis can also be treated with braces or other devices. These devices are worn around the chest or back to help straighten the spine. Kyphosis can also be treated with medication. Pain medication, steroids, and other drugs can be used to relieve symptoms. Kyphosis can be a serious condition, but it is often treatable. If you think you have Kyphosis, see your doctor for an evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment are important. Kyphosis can be prevented with good posture and exercise. Exercises that strengthen the back and abdominal muscles can help prevent Kyphosis.

Depending upon the type of kyphosis and the severity of the condition affecting the patient different kinds of physical therapy can be recommended to correct or strengthen the muscles around the upper vertebra. Physical therapy aims to alleviate pain, improve posture, and strengthen the muscles in the back and core. Exercises may include stretching, strengthening exercises with weights or resistance bands, balance and proprioception training, and postural awareness education.
In addition, physical therapists may also use modalities such as heat or cold packs to reduce inflammation and other manual therapies that target specific spinal muscles. Furthermore, they may recommend lifestyle modifications like avoiding activities that cause pain or spasm episodes in kyphosis patients. With proper physical therapy treatment over time, many kyphosis sufferers notice improved posture and decreased pain levels which can improve the quality of life.
In consultation with your doctors, your physical therapy may also recommend some safe exercise customized for you to ensure that your recovery and maintenance is on the right path.
